Beethoven Moonlight Sonata vs. Clair de Lune

I can play both almost flawlessly, but need to know your thoughts on which would be better for a competition. Thanks for all comments :)

Depends on the competition. Moreso it depends on what "almost flawlessly" means.

I'm with J Menz.

The Moonlight sonata would be more impressive, but if like 5 other people are playing it, then you have to be the BEST one.

First of all, what kind of competition is it? Doesn't it require specific repertoire? Isn't there any time limit?

Secondly, are you playing the whole Beethoven sonata? Then maybe this is the best option, because its movement has different mood and in this way, you can show that you can cope with 3 different styles. But, because of its popularity, it has to be played reaaally well!

And finally, it depends on which one you think you can play better and you feel more comfortable with.

The competition is for a chance for a solo performance of the piece I audition with, and there is no repertoire or time limit. It's for a music camp recital lol. And I only know the first movement of the Sonata, and by almost flawlessly, I mean 97 percent flawless, maybe a minor glitch.

If you're just talking about the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata, then I'd suggest going with Clair de Lune. Both pieces are played an awful lot, but of the two, I think Clair de Lune is a little less overplayed.

I agree.
It would be better to play Clair de lune.

As others have said, the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata is popular and sort of overplayed. Though they are both beautiful pieces, I would play Clair de Lune.

If you aren't play complete Moonlight with 3rd part, just play Clair de Lune.

What is the piece that you really want to play for the competition? Which piece, in your opinion, sounds more polished and practiced well? :)

How many movements of Moonlight Sonata are you playing? The first requires sensitivity, the second requires musicality, and the third requires a lot of finger dexterity. Claire de lune by Debussy is also a great choice; playing it truly well is really difficult though!

I've played both pieces, so please don't hesitate to ask me if you have any more questions :)

I only know the first movement of the Sonata

Well Michael, my teacher says that I play Clair de Lune much more musically and that  I put more feeling into it than I do the Moonlight. Not to mention it is more difficult than the moonlight. So i was thinking of playing Clair de lune!

In my opinion, you should definitely play Clair de lune if your teacher believes your way of playing it is better than the Moonlight Sonata. Good luck for the competition :)

If it's just the first movement of the Beethoven, I would 100% go with the Clair de Lune
