Party pieces
on: June 12, 2013, 01:06:03 AM
For something like a casual social gathering at home, get-together, backyard BBQ, etc.  Not a paid cocktail gig or anything like that.  There may be other musicians present, so possibility for duets and similar.

Me thinks Hammerklavier might be a bit dense for such occasions :D

Suggestions?
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Actually speaking of the Hammerklavier, should totally play the Scherzo.

I am holding a similar event in July.  And one of my friends has asked me to play the Beer Barrel Polka, aka Roll Out The Barrel.  I found the version by Liberace.  It's quite a fun piece to play and learn.  The left hand reminds one of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody Number 2.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

I like the 25/9 idea.

patrickd, your link doesn't work.  Would be interested in which Grainger piece you are referring to.

That's weird, well the piece was In Dahomey "Cakewalk Smasher".

But some other appropriate pieces could be

Mock Morris

Or some of the Irish Dances

If you're willing to play something a tad bit darker, I think Chopin nocturne in f minor, op. 55/1 is a nice option. Not super upbeat, but it's very pretty, and has a very warm sound. I think it might have been used in a whiskey commercial, too, so people might recognize it (many people enjoy hearing music they recognize over music they don't), although I can't seem to find the commercial so it's possible I'm imagining that.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31. Piano Street’s members are invited to watch the livestream. Read more
