Intermediate level piano concerto
on: June 18, 2013, 10:29:15 PM
I'm looking for an intermediate level piano concerto - no Liszt, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky here - for a concerto competition. I was thinking of maybe Mendelssohn d minor, Mozart c minor or Dussek g minor. Any other suggestions?

I guess I kind of have a thing for minor keys.

I would say that the Schumann is difficult, but it all depends on your forte.

Personally I found the Grieg very tough (6-against-7 in the cadenza, and one part after the lyrical section), and the opening of the 3rd mvt was relatively unplayable for me.

Many people here would probably disagree with me on this, but i found Totentanz relatively easier to play than the Grieg, and it was my first concerto... so just experiment and see what you can play best!

Thank you for your suggestions!
I think the Schumann would be difficult (the finale, for sure). In my opinion, Totentanz is difficult technically but not terribly difficult musically. On the other hand, Mozart musically...

What are your thoughts on the Dussek g minor (op. 49)? It's definitely not overplayed.

I never understood how a piece can be easy musically. If you think Totentanz is easy, musically, you're cleary not trying hard enough. And if you think Mozart is easy technically, your standards are clearly too low...

I never said Mozart was easy technically.

Sure, nothing's all that easy musically, but some pieces are easier to express. Get the technique down with good dynamics for Totentanz and you're at least on the right path, but Mozart is all perfect light touch and phrasing which is what makes it so difficult.

I agree. Chopin, Haydn, Bach, Scarlatti  and Mozart, is easier for me to like my interpretation than Liszt and Schubert.

Did not know Scarlatti and Schubert had written Piano Concertos. Shows what I know.

Anyway, the earlier Dussek Concertos would probably fit the intermediate bracket better than the latter ones. Personally, I would always go for the Stamitz PC in F. A most superb work in a Mozartian vein.

The Schumann should be avoided at all costs as it is a pile of festering donkey dung and is not worth 5 minutes study. The Martucci 2nd would be a far superior romantic choice.

Brull 1st might be a good one. Love the Paderewski, but I probably wouldn't be able to learn it in time.

Come on, guys, piano1mn must have been referring to works by those composers in general.

Have you looked into Beethoven's 2nd Piano Concerto? Arguably the most underrated piano concerto by the composer -- but again, his 5th Piano Concerto is overrated beyond belief.

C.P.E. Bach's Piano Concerto in A Minor Wq.1 H 403 is a fine choice as well.

Kabalevsky's 3rd Piano Concerto is a pure gem to listen to. Such sparkling melodies.

I never knew Scarlatti wrote COncertos. I only know that he is easier for me to interpret ty the wayhan other composers.
By the way, Bach's Concertos might fit you.
