Beethoven Tempest Sonata - Best Edition?
on: July 03, 2013, 02:08:28 AM
hey guys,

so i am planning to learn the tempest sonata, but right now i am choosing between 3 different editions: Breitkopf, Peters, and Dover

The Peters and Dover editions both have fingerings written in, and the Breitkopf doesn't. So should I get one of those two? However, they both have different fingerings

Here are the IMSLP links:

Breitkopf: https://javanese.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/2/23/IMSLP51737-PMLP01462-Beethoven_Werke_Breitkopf_Serie_16_No_140_Op_31_No_2.pdf

Peters: https://conquest.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/f/f4/IMSLP05543-Btsn31_2.pdf

Dover: https://conquest.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/f/f6/IMSLP00017-Beethoven__L.v._-_Piano_Sonata_17.pdf

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!   :)

Which one to buy, or which downloaded version to use?

Go to Vienna and buy the special Peters edition of the 32 with notes by Claudio Arrau. That is a level higher edition than any other.

Be warned if using Arrau's edition. He has his own unique set of fingerings that may be awkward for most. And I won't claim that it is a "higher" edition.

If you are looking at downloadable versions (meaning no cost) I strongly suggest you don't limit yourself to one edition.

Get an urtext.

Get MANY edited copies for reference.

I personally have a Buonamici edition of the full set on my shelf which has proved to be VERY useful. Its hard to find though these days I believe, though his teacher's (Bülow) is around if you are willing to buy it (imslp doesnt have it for the tempest). If you know your history you may know Bülow was student of Liszt, who was a student of Czerny who was a student of Beethoven.. So arguably there is some good insights in there.

Arrau's edition would be in the same category, he also has a fairly direct teaching lineage back to beethoven..

Arrau, Krause, Liszt, Czerny, Beethoven.

would rather like to get a copy of it myself to compare..
