How many times a month do you have lessons?
on: July 12, 2013, 08:30:03 AM
Currently 4 times each month, 1 time each week. But I'm going to ask for 2 times each month and 1 time each 2 weeks (personal reasons).

What about you?

At this point in life every day is a lesson being self taught now. When I had a teacher so long ago I did the opposite of what you want to do, I went from once per week to twice for a time, then back to once again near the end. Additionally, I took a summer course one year with a completely different teacher and different method of approaching playing/learning etc. I currently use both principles ( one for classical the other for more modern music)..
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Usually I have piano lessons approximately 4 times per month (once per week). But, sometimes twice per week or rarely once per 2 weeks, depending on what I have to work on with my teacher.

However, how long lessons last plays also an important role.

I have a lesson every week. I considered every 2 weeks when work was horrible, but I think it's still better to have every week even though I always felt I didn't have enough time to practice.

Do you think it's wise to change yours? I think in the early years, especially when you practice daily, you might loose quite a lot of time with doing something wrong if the lessons are too far apart. Sometimes I feel it would be good to have even more often...

Once a month ... but not during summer, though.
We have scheduled 60 minutes for each lesson but so far we have never managed to keep it under 2 hours each time  :D because we have such a nice time and there is so much to talk about and work with. But then I want to go home and work without stress for a while, so I don't find it particularly useful to take lessons often. I don't get assignments; instead we just work with what I want to work with + do some technical exercises.

I'm the type that learns best alone with experimenting and things like that. Besides that point, I could use the money for other things, I think twice a month would be well spent because I would have more time to practise what I've been given. Sometimes I feel like the next lesson creeps up too fast and I don't have enough done.........

But that's not how lessons should be, because you aren't performing, you are learning.

Like freaking one in a half to two a month!

I need more lessons!!!

If only he wasn't so *** expensive!!!

But during our lessons, since we don't have a lot, we GO TO WORK!  Nuh uh boy, we play no games!!!  Dude like we freaking lose calories during our lessons!  After we're done it's like we just hit the gym.

I feel like that most of the time, and I assume many of us who are not full time piano students do. It's just normal. It doesn't matter, because if your teacher knows how to work with you, every lesson you get something, either a new challenge or more tools to conquer the ones you already have.

I am like you, I can only concentrate on the actual learning alone, but I still think the frequent input from my teacher helps me push through walls that otherwise I might try to go around.

But I understand the money part of course...although if you ask me, just drop the violing lessons  ;)

But that's not how lessons should be, because you aren't performing, you are learning.

I believe it is part of the learning process to feel unprepared. One is seldom really ready anyway when it comes to piano or the pieces...I think it has been good for me to gradually learn to accept that and go to the lesson no matter how I feel...although when it comes to learning to handle frustration and incompetence I'm not quite there yet :)

You're very good rachforever. I listened to one of your Bach recordings; nice!

One to two lessons per month is better than nothing btw.

You've got me, hehe. It's getting too expensive with both piano and violin lessons. I'm going to cut both back to two lessons each month, so that's 4 lessons each month for music lessons.

On another note (lol, note, it's funny cause when someone says 'note' I instantly think of music notes): what does it mean if you can only sing along the piano in the D major scale?

If anyone has a idea, please let me know. My violin teacher told me if I can't sing along the piano I can't really learn the violin. Wut...>.< Not that I'm taking his comment to heart. I'd rather be horrible at something I love than excellent at something I hate.

I am not sure I understand what you mean? Surely you can sing other notes besides the ones in that scale?

Learning the violing requires you to learn to distinguish pitch (and produce it) in a different way than with piano, but whether you can sing or not shouldn't be relevant. It's about listening it...

thanks, ::) ::) ::)

In speaking of that Bach, I tried playing it in an encore last month, but I forgot it half way through the prelude.

I obviously missed the post or thread, event, where you announced taking up violin. In one way congratulations to you but seriously, these are two involved instruments, it's not like picking up a kazoo or some instrument to diddle around with. You have to put in intense work with both your choices, there are 24 hours in a day ! No wonder things have gotten complicated, expensive etc... You've totally done it to yourself. We are all created differently but with school and work, transporting yourself aren't you worn a bit thin for this ? You may need to make a choice for a while, take lessons for one instrument at a time. The one you have the most love for should win out. Put the other on the back burner for a while. At least so this early on in your learning experience. I know you have a fast mind and challenge yourself to move up quickly and all but we all have a limit.
Just a thought.

Logically speaking you are right David, but I'm weird and I've accepted being weird a while ago. The urge to play the violin is just too strong, and if it affects both my developments in both instruments, so be it. It's a risk I'm willing to take.

I also have to listen to my situation; I'm not rich and neither are my parents. So I have to find a compromise while being able to play both instruments. I'm not going to become a concert pianist/violinist, so in the end, the piano and violin are just passions of mine. Passions I'm willing to feed, and if it takes me 20 years to get good at the piano (a subjective matter but I hope you know what I mean) and violin, then so be it. Even if in those 20 years I could have become twice as good if I didn't start the violin.

Sometimes you have to do what your heart tells you to do, and if your heart shatters in the process, it's better than having a heart that's going to breakdown of misery either way.

It warms me that you care enough to advice me David, truly.

Hmm, more thinking out loud than advising. However, it seems you know exactly what you are doing, which is great ! You call yourself weird, I don't know about that but you are a go getter for sure.

It could range from anywhere between 0-12 times a month; depends on whether I'm here in Singapore or back in Canada...My teacher here in Singapore is a concert pianist so he is currently away and is frequently away. Currently use that time to train myself to me more independent and in the future I will only have 3-4 lessons per month when he is around.

Question: What pieces are being played here? He says scarlatti and scriabin, but which ones? He stops at around 4 minute mark.

Edit:

This one too please, what piece is played at the start?

The Scarlatti piece is K25.
EDIT: The other one is Scriabin Prelude, Op. 37 -  1.
