Suggestions for returning student repertoire
on: July 24, 2013, 07:33:59 PM
Hi all,

I'm totally new here and wanted to ask some advice.  Quick background:  I've played violin for >20 years, and am a trained classical soprano.  I have a degree in music performance.  I played piano from the time I was about 9 until I was 19 or so, but it was my second instrument, and really my third in terms of priority.  Then, I didn't have a piano in my house until this past April.  In the past couple of months months, I've worked up most of my old repertoire, but am hoping to add a few things to my repertoire.  Basically, I'm looking for suggestions on three levels:  pieces I could play quite easily (a level or two below what I can play now, but is still fun and interesting), pieces I could play with a couple of weeks of practice (around the same level as my current repertoire), and then reach pieces (harder than what I currently play, but not impossible).

I've worked on a few Bach inventions, Scarlatti sonatas, Haydn Sonatas, Mozart Concerto No 20 (second movement), but my love is really in the romantic/post-romantic period.

I've been playing recently:
Debussy - Girl with the Flaxen Hair, Arabesque 1, Le Petit Noir, Dr. Graddus ..., etc. (I'm a little obsessed)
Schumann - Traumerei
Schubert - Impromptu in A flat
Mendelssohn - a couple of Songs Without Words
Chopin - a couple of Preludes and Mazurkas

I'd love suggestions for things in my stylistic comfort zone (beautiful, lyrical pieces), as well as outside of it.  Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to Pianostreet.

Albéniz -Suite Española.

Joaquín Turina wrote some wonderful miniatures that would be at your level.  Check out the various sets of Danzas.

Since you seem to like Debussy, look at early and middle period Scriabin.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
