Repertoire Pieces?
on: July 29, 2013, 08:54:11 PM
I was wondering what to play next.
I have been playing for 12 years.
My current repertoire consists of:
Chopin-
Nocturnes Op. 48 and Op. 9
Sonata no. 2
Etudes Op. 10
Liszt
Don Juan Fantasy
Gnomenreigen
Schumann
Traumerei
Mendelssohn
Op. 16 no. 2
Mozart
Fantasy in D minor
Ravel
Ondine and Scarbo
La Valse
Stravinsky
Petrushka Mvmts. 1, 3
Balakirev Islamey
Beethoven
Les Aideux
Moonlight
Schubert
Impromptus op. 90
Bach
French Suites nos. 1, 2, and 5
English Suite no. 3
Concerto for Keyboard after Marcello
and a few scarlatti sonatas

Any good pieces by Chopin? Liszt? Which Thalberg Fantasy do you think I should play (bsides his Moses Fantasy) Rachmaninoff? Debussy?

Try a rach piano concerto.
Live large, die large.  Leave a giant coffin.

You have played all of these, you have reached this level and you need someone to tell you what to play ? Can't you choose your pieces by yourself ?

I always wonder about that myself, but there seems so much of it about. Incredible, really. Our education of young pianists seems to be lacking breadth.

I was wondering what to play next.

My current repertoire consists of:
...
List of pieces by long dead males.
...

So: Something by a woman. Something by someone alive. Something by a woman who is alive.

Puzzled myself...

A first shock in the list is that despite all the big repertoire you have, there are some "holes" in it. The only piece you have from Schumann is (according to the list) Traumerei. I would at least have the whole Kinderszenen. But if you have the level of Chopin op 10, then the etude symphonique are fantastic. I also notice there isn't a Haydn sonata or a Mozart one. If you liked fantasy in d minor, you could do the sontada in c minor and the fantasy in c minor, which have that sort of dark orchetral coolour to it. Haydn sonata, I love the 3 english sonatas, but all are wonderful.

other hints, scarlatti sonatas, debussy, faure, Albeniz, granados, ginastera.. gosh.. there is so much music!

I suggest going through imslp and reading lots of music!

People say this to me a lot, it is mainly because of competitions in my younger years... The repertoire that I listed doesn't include some pieces that I played when I was younger (Moonlight, Mozart's K545, Haydn sonata in c and debussy arabesque no 1)
But I will check out some of the other pieces that you mentioned

You have played all of these, you have reached this level and you need someone to tell you what to play ? Can't you choose your pieces by yourself ?

Just looking for something interesting  ;)
