Next Level?
on: August 01, 2013, 03:11:22 AM
Hey everyone!

I am a fairly new pianist, and recently I've been engrossed and I've been practicing a lot. I'm only officially working on Grade 5 royal conservatory, but I can play Moonlight Sonata, Mozart's Sonata in C Major, a good portion of Rondo alla Turca, Bach's Prelude in C Major, and the Goldberg Aria. I am aware that these are of varied difficulty, and most are above Grade 5. I love Bach, I am just getting into baroque and classical music.

Any recommendations for any really good-sounding pieces that would be challenging but not over my head?

Thanks in advance :)
Currently Playing:

Bach - Prelude and Fugue in E minor
Beethoven - Sonata #1 in F minor
Mozart - Sonata #17 in Bb Major
Brahms - Intermezzo in A major

Try Enrique Granados Playera Op 5 # 5.
You did the 2nd & 3rd movements of Moonlight Sonata the same year as the first movement and JS Bach Invention 8?  I had a twenty year gap between doing the first movement of the Moonlight, and starting the second and third movement.  There were 30 more years before I was satisfied with movement 3.
These grades seem a little inflated, compared to John W Thompson book numbers.

My guess is that he is only meaning the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata. Otherwise I would also be very impressed :)

Try some of the easier Haydn sonatas, Chopin mazurkas, and perhaps some of the easier works of Schumann (Piano sonatas for the Young, a few bits from Waldszenen and Kinderszenen).

Just look up the collections of works by these composers on www.henle.de (switch to English if you don't know German ofc) and look for pieces rated 5 out of 9 or lower, that is the difficulty level they give to op. 27-2's first movement).
