Ties ?
on: August 13, 2013, 11:02:40 AM
Hi. Could some-one help me ?
When playing a note at the end of a bar, and that note is tied to the same note in a chord on the next bar, do I hold the note down and only play the other two notes in the chord. For example: I play D-E-F-F at the end of the bar and the final F is tied to the F in the next bar that is attached to the Chord F. I think I do but I'm not sure which is strictly correct. Many thanks pete :)

You only hold the note with the tie. If the whole chord is supposed to be held, every note must have a tie.

No I don't mean holding any notes whilst playing the chord.
The f has a tie going to the next bar, which is attatched to the f in a chord of the following bar. so i think I should hold down the f and when I get to the chord just play bd whilst the f is still held instead of playing the f and then the whole chord. it does sound different. I just want to make sure I'm getting it right rather than get into any bad habbits. the chord is fbd, the tied note prev is f. Hope this makes sense. pete

Exactly.  The tie means to hold that note -- that is, do not repeat the attack on it.  The other notes are attacked as written.  If more than one note is tied, then both those notes are held.  Perhaps if you think of it in terms of attack and duration, it might make a little more sense...

Many Thanks, At first I was playing them separately then realised I had it wrong but needed reassuring. I like your interpretation, I shall take that on board. Great to have a site like this when you'r self learning. Cheers Pete :)
