Neglected/Forgotten Female composers
on: August 14, 2013, 07:07:47 PM
Can you guys recommend me some compositions by female composers (not just piano music)?

i just made an awesome discovery, Dora Pejačević's Symphony in F Sharp Minor...oh mah gawd it's so lovely. And her fantasie for orchestra and piano.....oh jesus....It's all too sweet. I haven't given her solo piano works a chance yet, but I will soon.

I'm already familiar with Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Wieck, and Cecile Chaminade :O

Of course don't get me wrong, I don't judge music based on the sex of the composer....

Indeed, Pejacevics neglect is almost impossible to explain. The fantasy is that good, it is almost painful. The piano concertos by Miriam Hyde are almost as good and the 2 concertos by Marie Jaell that were broadcast last year, possibly even superior to the Pejacevic.

I am developing a passion for Leopoldine Blahetka. There is a delicious Polonaise on you tube.

Clara Wieck

Clara Schumann is definitely not forgotten. Her piano output isn't that special so not really 'neglected' either I'd say.
General info:
Started playing music in the summer of 2010
Plays on a Bechstein B
Lives in Denmark

I'm a big fan of Sofia Gubaidulina, specifically her piece "Chaconne" is a great one:
It is one of those songs that at first seems very brash and random but after a few listens becomes quite catchy in its own way. I find myself humming some of the main themes.

She wrote a handful of other piano solo works and some orchestral/concerto-type works as well, search around for them. I think Spotify has some collection albums if you use that.

Musical Toys' the Fisherman 's Song is amazing.
