Rep. suggestions?
on: August 15, 2013, 01:39:22 AM
Hi everyone,

So I am looking for a romantic or 20th century/contemporary piece (i.e.: ca. 1815 - 2000) under 5 minutes that is going to impress judges at a local competition.  To give you an idea of my skill level: I have recently played Liszt's Liebestraume 3 as well as Brahms Capriccio Op 116 No 3 and have also played Debussy's Deux Arabesques.

I was wondering if you could give me a suggestion for an impressive piece at my skill level under 5 minutes.  My teacher gave me some suggestions, but I was just looking for another opinion.  Also, unfortunately, the judges at this competition have a bias towards faster, more energetic  rather than slower pieces.

Thank you all so much, I can't wait to hear your suggestions!

Wow! That was a quick response.  Thank you for the suggestions.  However, I was thinking of something quite a bit more difficult.  With that in mind, could you please point me to a few more ideas?

Thanks much!!!!

Why does it have to be difficult?  you asked for something 5 min or less that might be biasedly judged for speed. Those are quick little pieces . Go ahead play a Chopin etude if you must be more difficult. ( I find them difficult )  you may be at a whole different level and that is ok with me

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Okay.  Thank you! Now I got some really good contemporary/20th century suggestions.  Could anyone give me some romantic era suggestions?

Thanks!

Based on your repertoire, I would suggest a Rachmaninoff prelude.  Op. 2 no. 1 or 3 would probably be a good fit (a bit challenging based on the pieces you've studied) but still doable.  If you want to do something a bit more challenging, look at op. 23 no. 5 or op. 32 no 12.

If you still find those pieces lacking in virtuosity, try
-Liszt's Waldesrauchen, La Leggerezza, or Un Sospiro
-Chopin's op. 25 no. 10 - would probably be a perfect duration, but based on your repertoire, it doesn't seem like you'd be comfortable with the octaves.
-Rachmaninoff Moment Musical No. 4
-Liszt's 10th Transcendental Etude
-Rachmaninoff's transcription of Mendelssohn's Scherzo from a Midsummer Night's Dream

Something not romantic that hasn't been mentioned - Prokofiev's Toccata.  You'll probably find this very difficult past the first 2 pages or so.

If you can, maybe la campanella, or some TEs
just in case you're interested, there's a scarlatti sonata that is very flashy.  It's in d minor k 141.  It's quite difficult though.

Another somewhat flashy sonata by Scarlatti is I think K. 96 (?) Its in D major and has a lot of trills and repeated notes
Working on:
Bach: Prelude and Fugue in C Minor WTC 1
Rachmaninoff: Elegie Op. 3 No 1
Raff: Rigaudon Op. 204 No 3 (I think?)
Dvorak: Trio "Dumky" mvt 5
