Fix one damper ?
on: August 19, 2013, 11:11:31 AM
Why is my tuner dodging fixing one damper ? Is there something intrinsically difficult about this or is it just that he can't be bothered do you think ? It's been crook for three years. It isn't life and death but surely to goodness it can be fixed ? I met my previous tuner at the shops and he told me to fluff up the groove of the damper felt with a small wire brush. I haven't been game to fiddle with it but if the present man avoids it again I might try it. Anybody know anything about this ? It 's only one note.

From what I hear, it is a relatively minor job, but if you're not lucky, it may turn out to be quite time/labor-intensive. I'm sure there are good instructions online for both grands and uprights, but there is always a risk of damage, so having a technician at least look at it and give you the right instructions for your particular case would probably be better. :)
No amount of how-to information is going to work if you have the wrong mindset, the wrong guiding philosophies. Avoid losers like the plague, and gather with and learn from winners only.

Thanks. Yes, I guess it is up to me to insist he does something. He is an excellent technician and rebuilt my action beautifully seven years ago. Perhaps I am the lazy one. I'll sort it out at the next tuning.

Is it a grand or an upright? Either way I have found some minor damper problems can be fixed pro tem by manipulating the felt a bit. This can help to improve contact between the felt and the string. Have a look and see if you can see what's happening.
