Best/favourite lieder (Schubert, Beethoven etc)?
on: August 31, 2013, 08:36:15 PM
Knowledge is lacking in this field, but I don't know where to begin. There is too much to listen to...

My favourite lieder are the best known... Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade by Schubert.

Anyone have others they can recommend from the thousands of lieder out there?

All Schubert - listen to a complete cycle (or all of them). Mahler also is excellent. Benjamin Britten also wrote some excellent art songs if you are looking for something a little more modern.
