Which is harder?
on: September 01, 2013, 07:23:51 PM
I'm fourteen, and I just finished Chopin's winter wind etude and I was wondering if I was capable of learning debussy's etude no. 1 or rachmaninov's prelude in g minor. Which one of these are harder, and do you think I'm physically capable of learning either one? My hands can reach about a tenth. Do you think I can learn any? I want to learn these for an audition.

If you play the Chopin well, I don't see any reason whatsoever why you couldn't tackle either the Rachmaninoff or the Debussy. Both are challenging in their own way, but no more difficult than the Chopin. If you have big hands and enjoy playing big chords, I'd work on the Rachmaninoff. If you're more into finger work, try the Debussy. Since you can likely play both, you might as well focus on the one you a) like best b) will give you the most benefit as a developing pianist. And post a recording when you're done. We' love to hear the fruits of your work!
