Scratches on my NEW Yamaha U 3
on: September 29, 2013, 07:59:33 PM
I have owned my new Yamaha U 3 just two weeks.  I noticed that there are superficial scratches appearing on the cabinet directly behind where the music sits. The music I am using is paper.  This is very disconcerting.  I am the only person who is playing this piano, and I am extremely careful.  I thought the polyester finish was supposed to be very durable.  I am wondering if anyone has encountered this.  If after only two weeks there are scratches appearing, I wonder how the cabinet will look a few months from now.

The problem with high gloss polyester is just what you're finding: it shows every possible defect and scratch.  It's not that it's not durable -- it is -- but it really isn't that hard, compared with things which might be around to scratch it.  Such as: hard dust (very fine sand, for instance).  Paper clips.  Staples.  Watch bands.  Rings.  A drinking glass.

I regret to say, however, that I have no useful suggestions for keeping the problem from happening.  My own piano is a shellac finish, heavily waxed with black furniture wax.  Not, ultimately, as glossy.  Much easier to care for!

Same thing here, my 2 year old U1 is showing a lot of tiny straching...not that I really mind.

About all you can do is keep it heavily waxed with a decent hard wax, like floor wax or a good grade furniture wax. Not polish but wax.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Wax is fine -- but use a wax colour which matches the finish.  Typically ebony.  I use Briwax ebony on my pianos.

If you use white or clear, it will only make scratches more obvious!

I have the same problem with my 10 month old Yamaha YUS1, where my music folder with its hard plastic spine has been rubbing on the music rest. Its not obvious and you really have to look for it. For me the problem is fingerprints! Having 2 kids and a shiny black piano make for a full time job polishing it!

Just buff it out. A more expensive option is to have someone apply a hard coat on it, like on more expensive models.

When I tried a newish Fazioli in the practice room of a London dealer, the music desk was covered in plastic.  The piano must have been a couple of years old and used by hundreds of people but it still looked brand new.
Perhaps you could find some attractive soft fabric to drape over the music desk.  Plastic worked but looked horrid.  Saw the same problem on a 5 year old Steinway D I used recently, being part of the Steinway concert rental fleet it had a few other dings and skuffs : very high end pianos suffer from this to!.
