Scarlatti Sonatas
on: October 01, 2013, 11:12:35 PM
I'm looking for a good edition of the Domenico Scarlatti Sonatas. I already have a Schirmer edition with 60 Sonatas, but it doesn't contain lot of the really well-known and gorgeous sonatas, like many of the ones Horowitz used to play.
My question:
Does anyone know of a good edition, preferably in just one volume or two volumes, with lots of the well-known Scarlatti Sonatas?
(PS: I already know about downloadable pdf files of the sonatas on IMSLP. That's not what I'm after. I want to get an actual printed book or two.)

I don't think you will find any edition that has "a perfect" selection for you. The content of the selected editions vary a lot.
I have 2 of the 3 Henle books. I also have the 2 Peters books. These include a good selection of the sonatas, but they are also missing quite a few of the ones I wanted. The selections seem to have a lot of faster sonatas, while I tend to prefer slower ones. So I ended up buying books from the Ricordi complete sonatas series, although they are quite expensive. I haven't got them all yet, I usually get a new one when there's a certain sonata I want to play.
I have a file with all the sonatas listed in the books I have, so if you think it will be helpful, just PM me.

Yes, that's been my experience in looking at various editions at music stores when I've had the opportunity. I may email you for that list after I've looked around a bit more. Thank you.

Alfred publishes 3-4 volumes of the Sonatas.
