Chopin Barcarolle Op. 60 Question
on: October 11, 2013, 04:05:12 PM
So I'm learning this piece, mostly because of the epic ending and my Chopinomania, but I had a question stuck in my head for a long while. While listening to this piece on youtube, I have noticed slight differences in the ending sequence. I'll show you what I mean.

Take a look at this first:

https://conquest.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/9/99/IMSLP86586-PMLP02633-chopin-bar.pdf

Look at the second from last page, 3rd row, last chord on bar 2 and first chord on bar 3.
So the C#s are tied. Same thing happens twice again in the 4th row and once more in the 5th row.

I had been playing this version since I started practicing but watching Zimerman's interpretation on youtube, it's clear that he's not playing it like this. Then I looked for other editions and found:

Which is pretty much what he plays (the notes aren't tied).

So my question is, why is there a discrepancy between the editions? Should I just play whichever I want? Thanks.

Chopin was an inveterate tweaker of his pieces. He had three publishers, and for some pieces there exist changes in his hand to proofs from each which are mutually inconsistent.

As long as you play in accordance with a recognised edition, pick the version you prefer.
