not sure my pf alerts are working [Bob asks]
on: November 10, 2004, 04:26:14 AM
I've got nofications set up for quite a few topics. When someone replies, the pf site emails me to notify me.
However, I see several posts with replies, but no emails have come in.
Any ideas why?
Does the pf site only alert me once a day now or something?

Yes, I'm more certain (not absolutely positve though) that my notifications aren't working. I see several threads with replies, and I've got notifications setup, but I don't get anything.
How do notifications work? Does the pf site put cookies on my computer? I clear out all my temporary files, cookies, and internet stuff about once a week in order to do system scans and all that fun virus stuff. I may be deleting these pf notication cookies if that's how they work.
Do you know why I'm not getting notifications? Nilsjohan?
Or, does the pf site just email notifications once a day or something? Still, I would think I'd be getting something from a thread with a reply.
I'm confused about all this.

I have tested the notifications and they work well for me.
There might be some spam filter taking care of the emails. As you have set up notifications on almost 200 topics you will be sent a serous amount of emails every day and it is likely that yahoo is regarding pianoforum.net as a spammer and just blocks all our emails. Have a look at your email account and turn the spam filter off to see if it makes any difference.
Anyone else using notifications? Does it work for you?

Yes, I seem to be experiencing a similar problem. I do get notifications on some of the threads, but not on others. I would say that around 70% of the posts I asked for notification were not given. (I am not too worried about it though).
Best wishes,
Bernhard.

I am getting far more notifications now. I think that I have to access the email notifications while logged. Otherwise, they somehow do not register and I am not sent any subsequent notifications (does that make sense?). Anyway, this seems to have solved the problem.
Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Interesting Bernhard...
I was logged out for awhile after I cleaned up my computer's temporary files. I still go the notifications. Odd...
I'm barely getting any now.
I tend to get notificationis for the boards rather than individual posts.
I don't get it at all, but I know something's not right.

Since I started checking the notifications while being logged on, the situation improved dramatically, and now I believe it is normal.
Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Yes, I don't think there are any problems.
It was probably the change of how notifications work that made us all confused.
Bob, if you still think you have a problem, go to the notifications sections in your profile and click all of the links to view all of the topics/boards for which you have notifications turned on. The following days you should get notifications of those boards/topics. If not, let me know again...
In case you didn't see my post regarding this in the "New software" thread, the new conditions for notifications are:
If subscribing to notifications of an entire
board
you only get notifications when a
new topic
is created.
When subscribing to notifications of a specific
topic
you will only be notified of the first new unread post. This means you must be logged in and read the topic (so that the "New" icone at the topic disappears) in order to receive further notifications. (Read from email link makes no difference if not logged in.)

I think I understand now....
I had this box checked
Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.
So, if I never looked at that thread when I was notified, I probably wouldn't receive another notification because the software thought I never read that first unread reply, so why would it send notifications for additional unread replies after the first?
Well, I unchecked that box, so I think I might receive notifications for everything now which I what I had in mind -- A notification every time someone posts on a thread I'm watching.
Otherwise, as Nilsjohan suggests, I could "refresh" my notifications by going to my profiles, under Notifications and emails, and clicking each link. Sounds like a lot of time though, so I'm trying unchecking that box. We'll see what happens...
.... I also see this in the email notifications...
More replies may be posted, but you won't receive any more
notifications until you read the topic.
Bingo! Although I wonder what will happen now that I've unchecked that box.
I see the light! (I think)

Yeh! I got about 50 notifications today. It must have been that checked box!
Problem is... solved!
btw, I cleaned my temporary internet files today, so that wiped out my pf login. That means I probably wasn't logged in while all these notifications occurred.

First of all, even if you are "logged in forever" the forum only regards you as logged in when you have the piano forum site open in a browser window.
Anyway, just being logged in or not doesn't affect the notifications. It is only when you read the topics you have notifications on that the logging make sense. But since you have unchecked the "Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply" box it doesn't matter at all. You will probably continue to receive at least 50 emails per day. That is why I don't recomend to uncheck that option, but it is of course completely up to you!

Ah. I just have the notifications filtered into a folder and then delete them if I'm not interested anymore. I like to know what's going on, which posts have gotten responses, etc.
