Romantic piece for beginner - intermediate

Hello,

I'm going to say some things that I know will encourage the response "Get a teacher..."

Yes I know, and I appreciate that a good teacher is always the best advice.

However, please understand that I just don't want one.... I play the piano only for myself and for pleasure.

I am a classical guitarist and violinist really. I had music lessons from being a child until my early 20s. I accept that I simply don't have the time to dedicate to the piano as an adult learner if I want to continue practicing my other instruments to a reasonable standard.

So with that in mind... here is my question.

Can anybody recommend a good anthology of romantic pieces? Ideally they might be ordered by difficulty so that I could enjoy working through them... but I realise that's probably too much to ask.

I have looked at the Romantic Sketchbook series published by ABRSM but it's not until about book IV of the series that there is enough recognisable music in it to make me want to buy it. For me, books 1-3 seem to be a lot of small "study" type pieces that I've just never heard of.... I apologise if that makes me sound incredibly ignorant.

There are fairly simple pieces that I have already learnt by Beethoven for example and Cesar Franck and also a couple of the Chopin Preludes.

Where can I find more stuff like this?

Have you checked out "Anthology of Romantic Pieces", by Alfred, edited by M. Hinson? Regarding Romantic Sketchbook, why don't you purchase volumes AFTER Level 3 or 4? To supplement, you can use Schumann's "Album for the Young", or "Kinderscenen."
