Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies are among his masterpieces, and for one who has not played any Liszt before, it would be unwise to start with the Rhapsodies. Start first with the smaller pieces, such as his Un Sospiro. READ about him! Wikipedia is fine! Understand his style and personality and composition ideas!!!!
Too often people believe Liszt to be harder than he actually is. But this is unnecessary. Remember, Liszt was a PIANIST so his pieces were designed to fit the hand of the piano player. Those with their basic technical idioms-scales, arpeggios, broken chords, and octaves should have no problem with Liszt. Otherwise, do not work on Liszt, for he will be unforgiving.
All of the Rhapsodies are not easy to play, although No. 11 is the shortest. That does not mean easy, however.
All the best!
