Palms are Sweeatttyy
on: November 12, 2004, 01:27:16 PM
My piano teacher is thinking that I am not practising enough coz I always dont seem to play as well at the lesson then I do at home.  I think its because my palms feel really sweaty and it kind of affects my playing.  Any solutions?

"Any solutions?"

Yes, relax and don't stress so much in front of the teacher.  I know, it's easier said than done. ;)

But really, most are stressed when they play in front of the teacher.  It's a natural reaction.  All week long you've been practicing by yourself or around family members who are used to your practicing and ignore it for the most part.  Then you get in front of the person who assigned the practice in the first place.

Before trying out your piece in front of the teacher, try doing some things to relax you just a bit.  A little steady breathing and perhaps a slow scale run might do the trick.

You can also practice playing your piece in front of someone.  During a practice session, ask a parent, significant other, or friend to come over and hear you play your practice piece once through.  With them right there listening closely, you can get something of the stress of playing in front of your teacher.  The more often you do it, the less stressful it becomes.

My teacher always says that you always perform worse a lesson than at your home
A good teacher with enough experience should know this and always take in account the "not on your home, not in your piano, in front of your teacher" factor
I know even at the exam they take this clearly into account

If you become sweety the solution is to stand up, breath at the windows and drink a glass of water every other piece
If you keep seating for 60 minutes without breathing, stretching, drinking and walking will you lose your concentration and calm very soon
In fact if you want to be a concertist you need to train your endurance, but it's not needed at your lesson
I've noticed that if I stand up and stretch between performing my pieces for few seconds I play a lot better when I come back to the piano

Always perform your lesson with the windows open, you need lot of oxygen
Don't forget also to be comfortable with what you dress, not heavy fleece or sweaters just a short sleeve t-shirt so that you don't get too hot and sweety

My piano lessons are in a a small windowless room with a space heater to control the temperature (changes in temperature affect the tuning, maybe that's why I don't know.)  I know I still get nervous at lessons but much less so than when I first started at least.

I agree with wearing light clothing, or at least dress in layers so you can remove a layer if you get hot.

usually it happens when I'm nervous, but lately a lot just whenever..
it drives me nuts >_>

It's good to practice with sweaty hands. When you have dry hands, it will be so much easier to play correctly, and if you encounter sweaty palms during a recital, you will already be used to it and it won't affect your playing.

Me too, I stink at my lessons  :-[
That's why in my school-bag I've always perfumes, cologne, deodorant
The problem is I get sweaty during the trip to school: 15 miles from my house

A good idea is to try Talcum Powder. If that doesnt work spray your hands with Anti persperant spray.
