Any music beautiful like Claude Debussy's?
on: November 18, 2013, 11:47:30 PM
I just love so many of Debussy's pieces (pretty much all of them, but for reference, the Suite Bergemasque, the Arabesques, Sarabande from pour le piano, Bruyeres prelude, and ballade are my favorites) because they are beautiful and so different than most other composers' I've heard, and was wondering if there were any others that were beautifully emotional similar to the way his pieces are.

The obvious choice would seem to be Ravel, but I note you don't like him.  That makes it difficult.

Try some Jacques Ibert, and try some Alkan.  What you like, or dislike, from this will be informative and assist further suggestions.

try ravel's introduction and allegro, or his string quartet 2nd movement.
otherwise try his gaspard de la nuit, or 2nd movement of his sonatine.
or perhaps try Leo Ornstein, 4th sonata.

I cannot say similarities in emotion as you gave such a wide variety with e Debuasy compositions you list, but you did mention preludes from this period.  You will be served well to explore more by...

Try Frederic Delius....Jacques Ibert...Vincent d'Indy...  ;)

Charles Koechlin is arguably the closest you will get to Debussy. Not that I have listened to a great deal of his work, as I cannot stand this type of French Impressionistic crap.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I listened to Ibert and Frederic Delius and those were great suggestions, exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to check out more later

Listen to Debussy's Estampes  :)

Are you suggesting he didn't write it?

Griffes!!

Check out his Roman Sketches.  Fountains at the 'Acqua Paola' and 'Clouds' are right down your alley.  He has some very cool stuff; he's American, so he's kind of a contrast to the French Impressionists (he was writing around the same time).
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

What are you talking about?
Clementi, Piano Sonata in G Minor, No. 3, op. 10
W. A. Mozart, Sonata for Piano Four-Hands in F Major, K. 497
Beethoven, Piano Concerto, No. 2, op. 19

Estampes is, as far as I know, BY Debussy, not LIKE Debussy.

You could say it IS Debussy.

Nicole made it clear enough that she knew it was written by Debussy. You always seem to be finding something to nitpick.

See my post earlier on Arnold Bax elsewhere on the board..., his sound is not like Debussy but is similar at times perhaps in a bolder direction of where it might have gone eventually.... ;)

Nitpicking is part of the pedants creed. It's not my fault if there's so much to work with.  8)
