Need Help Choosing Competition Piece
on: November 19, 2013, 03:12:33 AM
Hello, I am doing a competition next spring at my college, and we need to choose 2 contrasting pieces. We have 15 minutes for both pieces. I have one piece (Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 3 in D major, 1st movement). This piece is a little over 5 minutes. What is a "show piece" that I could choose as my other piece, keeping in mind it should be contrasting? I would like to choose something difficult and showy.

If you can play islamey, go for it.  But because it is well known as a hard piece, you should only play it if you know you can nail it.  If not, perhaps do a liszt etude, a harder one would be better, TEs, 4,5 (this one could murder you and your hands), 8, 10, 12, la campanella, paganini etude 6.  Maybe a chopin scherzo.  2 is common, 3 is great and very beautiful.

Fazil Say did some very good and impressive showy transcriptions of some Bach.  Bach is not so common on the showy portions, it should be!
Just one example

Scarbo if you can handle it and give it something unique.

His Paganini Jazz Variations are also great (if you've got the chops)

Which reminds me that his (Ponce's)  P&F on a Theme of Handel is also suitable:

Playing the flashiest piece does not guarantee anything. What matters is that you PLAY WELL and feel comfortable on the day of your performance!

The judges are interested in more than just technique. So many people have good technique. Who cares? But what matters is that you will be able to understand the piece musically and play it well! I do not know your other repertoire, so I cannot suggest anything. Showiness guarantees nothing. Lang Lang has great technique, but horrible musicality!

Which movement of the Beethoven Op. 10 No 3 are you playing? Keep in mind, the second movement is very long. The first movement fits into 5 minutes WITHOUT repeats.

I would do two contrasting movements or pieces. If you are playing the Beethoven Op. 10 No. 3's second movement, I would play something, as you say, a faster, more virtuosic piece.

Liszt Transcendental Etudes are wonderful showpieces that demonstrate the best of technique. DO not be scared-they are not too hard. Liszt lies well in the fingers-remember that he was a pianist who wrote music for the modern grand piano!
