ARCT Piano small hands suggestions
on: November 29, 2013, 02:25:11 PM
I am currently pursuing my ARCT in piano, I have my list A (Bach Prelude in Fugue in G from book 1) and Etude (Chopin Etude in E Major Op 10 no. 3). I can reach an octave but not always if there are more notes in between - my right hand cannot play a C Minor 4 note root position chord for example. If anyone has any suggestions for Lists B, C, or E with a small wing span that would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

List B - most Mozart sonatas should be fine!
List C - Try Brahms' Rhapsody in G minor; it has octave leaps, but nothing bizarre. It's a very melodic piece, lots of good expressive parts. I would suggest a Chopin, but you already have the etude
List E - This one is tougher... I did Danzas Argentinas, but I distinctly remember the third movement having a very nasty passage in the right hand in octaves w/ notes in between. Check out Visions Fugitives by Prokofiev, or his Suggestion Diabolique. I hope you can play some fast passagework haha! Also, check out some Shostakovich preludes and fugues. Some are probably best avoided for you (the d minor fugue has tons of octaves), but a few are a little more approachable.

It's good to have some ambitious stuff for the ARCT, but I remember knowing the Brahms COLD for the exam, compared to the Ginastera. I also did the Grieg Sonata (which is now bumped to List C), and again, it just seemed like too much coming after my Bach (I also played the same P/F as you are).
So you have some good rep listed; check out the suggestions I made, or get a copy of the syllabus and skim through IMSLP for some ideas.

Thanks for your suggestions! That helps a TON and will save me a lot of time in the long run. Yeah, fast passages are fine for me as long as its not too difficult with the reach. I can't wait to start diving into some of these songs. Thanks again!
