help regarding sheet music
on: December 12, 2013, 07:17:53 PM
https://erato.uvt.nl/files/imglnks/usimg/b/b0/IMSLP18735-PMLP44355-HG_Band_2.pdf

page 82,  last beat of variation 8, ur supposed to play the b note which is already held down as part of the g chord, how do i work my way around that ?

i see this from time to time in handels and bachs music, so far ive just sort of played the note twice and then continued to hold it down for the duration of the original note.

any thoughts on this ??

I'd lift it off again, rather than holding it. Otherwise it will hold on at a much louder level than the rest of the original chord, which, given the fermata on the low G, is probably not serving much purpose in this point. If you can put it down again without sounding, then that is probably best, but it's a bit fraught in performance (you certainly don't want it sounding again).

Another option is to lift the whole chord off after the fermata and treat the last three notes as a lead in to the repeat and then variation 9.

ok i see. most of the time the note getting repeated isnt part if a cord, would i still just not press it down again after it has been repeated ? also, should the fermata pause the whole piece, or should the piece continue with the fermata in the background ?

Only if you can reliably do that without it sounding again.

I don't understand. The whole piece gets paused there (normally this would be indicated by another fermata over the upper chord, but that is missing here which makes me think it has faded enough not to be a feature).

ok i see. so maybe im better off not repeating it.

what i meant regarding the fermata is, does the piece get sort of halted ? im wondering because there are notes after the note with the fermata.

A fermata just means that you hold the note (or rest, if that is what it's over) for longer than it's normal value. I believe the convention is 1.5 time it's normal value, but I think it's nowhere as precise or fixed as that. Let your taste dictate, so try out several options - one of them will click as being the best effect.
