I was just thinking that even though all the sexy stuff makes classical music look like a sell-out, I think that it's vitally necessary to help bring attention to this genre. If these sexy or hunky (are there even any real hunky male pianists?) were able to attract larger crowds than traditional pianists, that would be good publicity because of the halo effect.
Take Yundi Li, for example. He's not hunky but some women find him attractive enough that they don't care what he sounds like. His looks has helped sell many tickets, I'm sure, and this is good for concert organizers and record labels. The only problem with Li is that in the US, asians tend to be looked down upon and derided. So we need a white version of Li that would better propel classical music to the mainstream spotlight.
And no, I do not mean Maksim.
But...
If fireworks work at attracting an audience, why not?
Or better yet, hire swoons of women to throw their underwear on stage like they did for Liszt. That would make for a great publicity stunt! And since popularity is often manufactured, I wouldn't be against any kinds of gimmicks like this.
