Gaspard de la nuit VS Miroirs
on: December 19, 2013, 10:46:26 PM
We discuss this separately ,
1 musically
2 technically
3 generally
I think that Alborada del gracioso is technically the most difficult,
Musically, le Ondine ...maybe
Generally ,too hard to say...
Beethoven 4th concerto
Beethoven op.111
Ravel Une barque sur l'océan
Franck Prelude chorale et Fugue
Scriabin sonata 4

You do understand that only because there are topics this doesn't make it any less subjective and impossible to answer truthfully, right? What's more difficult, entertaining an audience using ondine or La Vallée des Cloches? I'd say the latter. Not saying it's more difficult musically, but you got my point.

Ok then, my opinion on this right now would be this
1. Le Gibet
2. Scarbo or Ondine (ok, this one is actually quite easy to answer)
3. Ondine.

I feel a bit like an idiot ranking these pieces.
Chopin First Scherzo
Guarnieri Ponteios
Ravel Sonatine
Rachmaninoff Prelude op. 32 no. 10
Schumann Kinderszenen
Debussy Brouillards
Bach, Bach, Bach...

Hmmm, since in the original post you didn't really specify "difficulty", but just listed some random stuff… I'll post some random stuff I found from these pieces! lol

These are both musical masterpieces!!! And are *** awesome pieces to work on (individual works or the full sets)

In terms of accessibility, these are both at the further end of the piano spectrum… the problem with comparing them is that the material in the sets is so varied…

For example… the textural writing in Le Gibet is thick as hell… Alborada del Gracioso uses a play on 3/4 - 6/8 and uses double glissandi… Ondine uses a shimmering figure to accompany a very simple melodic line… Une Barque sur l'Ocean uses a vast expanse of arpeggios, and explores huge harmonic colours… etc. etc. etc.

In a battle over how 'CRAZY' these sets are, both would drop dead from exhaustion.  They are immense works, generally with Ondine/Scarbo/Alborada at the peak.

If you are ONLY looking for 'which is harder', try it yo damn self!  8)
