Preperation for Ravel's LH Concerto
on: December 28, 2013, 10:38:47 PM
Hey all,

I have always wanted to learn Ravel's D major concerto and was wondering what Etudes, pieces or exercises would be most suitable in preparing my LH. Godowsky, Saint Saens, Alkan and Scriabin often come up as good choices from my teacher but neither of us know where to begin! There's so much repertoire!

Hope you can help me out,
Tom
Current Repertoire:
Ginastera -Sonata
Bach- Prelude and Fugue #14 (WTC 2)
Berg - Sonata
Liszt - Paganini Etude #2
Kapustin - Big Band Sounds

I was planning to learn that next year!
My teacher recommended this for me along with a lot of left hand repertoire (for some reason)

Saint-Saens' etudes seems like a good place to start, that's probably where I might begin. I don't think Godowsky will be a good place to start, but it would be good to prepare one just before you begin the concerto or something...

Check out Scriabin's Prelude and Nocturne for Left hand. Brahms transcribed Bach's famous D minor Chaconne into an etude for the left hand.

Just some ideas, good luck with the learning it!
Beethoven - Piano Concerto No.2, Piano Sonata Op 57
Chopin - Ballade Op 23
Liszt- Hungarian Rhapsody No.14
Ravel - Pavane Pour une Infante Défunte
Cramer/Bulow,Chopin Etudes
Chamber music
