repertoire help!!
on: January 01, 2014, 08:16:04 AM
As a new years resolution i want to learn a few new pieces this year, but im finding it difficult to pick a few pieces i want to play, and after a pretty barren 2013 where i only learnt one thing (a Chaminade piece) i want to make 2014 a good start musically! some pieces ive played before include Chopin Ballade No1, scherzo 2, polonaise op.53, Haydn e flat major sonata, Kapustin Variations Op.41 and Granados Allegro de Concierto

Is there any composers you haven't played their works for a while (past 2 years)?Give them a shot this year. For example if you have been playing Haydn, play some Mozart or Beethoven. Instead of Chopin try some Rachmaninoff. Personally I would recommend you to try Rachmaninoff's Musical Moment n 4, it's a very beautiful work, and suites your repertoire as well, since you said you have played Chopin's 1st Ballade and scherzo. How about starting on some virtuoso etudes, for example Liszt's transcendental etudes.

what you have played really says very little about what you should or can play. rather how you did so is much more forth telling. still, give these a gander. see post in the purchases thread for edition example.
not my favorite performance (there is one on a naxos label album I much prefer, but G does a nice job still)
range from middle/late advanced to very very mature/advanced (recording artist/concertizing artist level)-none are very long, effective as a set (most effective I think), or individually as short solo.
