Just Curious about you guys' opinions!
on: January 03, 2014, 03:47:29 AM
What do you all think in general about the listed pianists.  Just give a brief explanation of how you feel about their playing and their renditions of pieces:

Glenn Gould
Vladimir Horowitz
Arthur Rubenstein
Sviatoslav Richter
Murray Periaha
Emil Gilels
Evgeny Kissin
Vladimir Ashkenazy (sorry about spelling I think)
Maurizzio pollini

Thanks Guys!

They're all good.

But Horowitz is my overall favorite.  Not absolute favorite.  DIFFERENCE. >:(

And why the heck does everyone say that Kissin is a robot?!  Well not everyone says he's a robot, but a lot of people do.

He's not!!!

People need to stop confusing lack of mistakes with lack of musicianship.

Glenn Gould is probably the best pianist to ever be recorded.

In my opinion

I'm the best pianist to ever be recorded. 8)

When I play...  People go deaf because they can't take the awesomeness of my playing.  So that's why whenever I play now, I hold back my awesomeness so the audience doesn't go deaf.  That's why whenever I post something in the audition room, it's not very good.  I'm doing you guys a favor!

Yeah...  Think about that for a while. 8)

Okay but seriously though...

I don't know dude!  He plays fine I guess!

I have a quarrel with Bach! not people who play Bach.

No wait...  I absolutely HATE his Beethoven.  Other than that he's fine.

No wait...  And what is with all his humming!!!  Jeez stop doing that please!!!  Other than that he's fine.

Okay now I'm done.

Arthur Rubinstein and Horowitz are probably my two favorites on the list. Evgeny Kissin is not a "Good" artist. Rubinstein and Horowitz definitely top him.

Most of my favorites are not on the list but from these the ones I seem to listen the most are Richter, Ashkenazy and Pollini. The few recordings I have from Gilels are wonderful, but the sound quality is bad :(

For some reason I hardly ever listen to my Horowitz recordings anymore, I used to like him more...or Gould, but that's because they are Bach  ;D

Rubinstein's greatness will always remain a mystery to me I guess...I have never liked his playing.

Kissin and Perahia have remained somewhat distant. I am not sure if I like their overall tone or not...Need to listen to them more.

Obviously I have not heard any of the pianists on this list live, so I have to base my opinions on their recordings. And those pianists who have mainly recorded Beethoven, Bach or Mozart or classical era stuff in general will not even find their way to my ears...

Same.

But I think that's because the quality of his recordings are so bad.  They're like overly staticy.

And you can't capture as much detail with poor recording technology (compared to today), so newer recordings with pianists that may not be as great as Horowitz will sound better than a Horowitz recording.

Dude, Kissin is actually one of the reasons I started getting back into piano! It's just something about him that attracted me back to piano again... Or maybe it was just the hair. Yeah, it was the hair.

Frequently listen to horowitz and pollini, gould's mozart
actually makes me angry, although I'll listen to his Goldberg
variations for a different perspective, and
licence to play the aria how the hell I want.
I've not warmed to periaha or kissin yet.
All I can here on periaha's chopin etudes is the
clackety clack of uncut finger nails. Thoughts on
Brendel anyone?

That is just my opinion Mr. Rachmaninoff_forever, don't let it bother you.
