Audition recital
on: January 06, 2014, 04:21:41 PM
I'm going to be going for an audition for conservatoire (undergrad entry) at the end of this year and I just wanted opinions on my planned pieces. I know there are countless threads with this topic, but the number of people playing stuff like Alkan etudes etc just scares me a little!

Anyway, it's 3 pieces for a minimum of 20 minutes:

-Beethoven, 'Waldstein' Sonata 1st movt.
-Liszt, 'Un Sospiro'
-Prokofiev, Sonata no. 2 4th movt.

The Prokofiev and Liszt are both already under the fingers so I just have to get the Waldstein up to *near* perfection...

Is there enough variety and are the pieces of an acceptable standard in terms of "difficulty"? I'm also open to any alternative suggestions!
Thanks :)

If you can get that Beethoven Waltz to performance standard, you're pretty much concert pianist standard. Don't underestimate these pieces you've chosen. I'm not saying you're not up to them, but sometimes choosing easier repertoire is the best choice. This way you let other things shine through, instead of the bazillion notes in the score. But hey, I don't know you. Maybe you're just exceptionally good!

Anyways, yes. These pieces are "difficult" enough. The Liszt being easier than the others in my opinion, but still by no means an easy piece.
Chopin First Scherzo
Guarnieri Ponteios
Ravel Sonatine
Rachmaninoff Prelude op. 32 no. 10
Schumann Kinderszenen
Debussy Brouillards
Bach, Bach, Bach...

Thanks for the reply - puts my mind at ease a little! I'll definitely try and get that Waldstein up to performance standard, it's an absolute favourite of mine.
