Pedaling for the autograph version of Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu
on: January 06, 2014, 06:10:41 PM
I am looking for guidance and suggestions regarding the use of pedal for the Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu autograph version that was made available by Piano Street through the Holidays. Also it would be great if Piano Street could come up with an instructional score of this piece as it did for the Prelude #4 by the same composer. Looking forward your replies since nobody has done it in the performance section of the forum

I would suggest you play it through ten or fifteen times entirely without pedal, each time making sure that you are producing tone as beautifully as you can with your foot flat on the floor, away from the pedal.
Once you've done this, you should have a pretty good idea about how much pedal you wish to use. Perhaps you could post a recording once you've reached that point, and I'll be able to give you more advice.

Thanks a million for your reply. I will follow your suggestions regarding the composition in question. Sometimes I just field more confident when a score clearly marks the use of the pedal, however, I think I need to trust more my musical sense and I believe your suggested method will encourage that. Thanks again

Why are you using Chopin's rather than Fontana's? Fontana's is easier and sounds better, imo.
I disagree that to learn this piece you must do so dry. Adding pedal allows you to control the crescendo in tone that builds up. Without pedal, you have no concept of how it's going to sound.

In my experience, the better concept you have of how it's going to sound WITHOUT the pedal, the greater the possibilities of tone that you will be able to access WITH the pedal!
