Is there any FAP where you live?
on: January 08, 2014, 09:20:25 PM
I live in a small backwater country, so we don't have a Federation for Arts Performances, do you think that could hurt my development as a pianist? For example I have heard that in such places where institutes like this exist it is easier to get more quality material.

Do you think a FAP is a must for someone to grow as an artist?

My city has something called the "Arts Council" where rich people that like arts like symphonies, ballet, and opera, get together and try to get other rich people and corporations to provide support for professional arts groups.  As a result my city has a symphony, a ballet corps, and an opera group.
by contrast, the US Federal Government National Arts organization often supports weird performance art that says nothing to me.  So local control meets the needs of your city, I say.
We have an Organ Guild here, a sort of professional organization for performing organists, that puts on a wonderful series of free concerts through out the year and publicizes organ concerts by other groups.  The AFM wind musicians union organizes a band that plays in the park once a year.  The American Piano Guild, does nothing that i can detect here.
Perhaps you could get together with some like minded people and set up an arts organization in your city.  It doesn't have to involve the government (which gets into patronage more than art, I tend to suspect)  and it doesn't have to involve money. It can just be people that like a particular art getting together sometimes and sharing what they can do.  Good luck.

Thanks a lot for your answer, I will certainly keep this in mind once I get better at piano.

I know a group of people that have organized regular home recital/potluck parties.  They basically just play for each other, but there are some pretty high caliber concert artists that take part.  It's all just for fun and music.  You may be able to organize something like that.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
