Looking for a Jazz score
on: November 17, 2004, 11:34:33 AM
Hi,

I know, this forum is mostly about classical music, but I couldn't find one as big as this about piano music.

...A friend sent me a jazz spiece that is really good, but we don't have the name of it (and not either the partitures). We'd like to play it together, but writing it down note by note is an awful lot of work.
Maybe somebody can help me?

It's a pity I only have few informations (duration:  2:10, size: 1.99mb)
If somebody could tell me where I could upload it (to the www), you would be able to listen to it and maybe help me.

Thx,

Greez, Andru

Email it to me and I'll post it where everyone can download it.

Here is the recording that andru is referring to.  I don't recognize it myself, but perhaps someone else will.

I do not know it either, but it sounds very much like Brazilian jazz. Here are three names for you to investigate: Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Paschoal and Wagner Tiso.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

I think I've heard that before, but I really don't remember who it is. Sorry. I'm almost positive that the piano player at least is American and not Brazilian. Man, it's bugging the crap out of me that I can't think of who it is.

Anyway, it doesn't sound too hard to transcribe. The melody is pretty simple, and the bass is playing all the roots of the chords, except where it doubles the melody. You may as well just go ahead and transcribe the thing.

Cool song. I may have to learn that one.

Thanks for the answers, I'll give it a try and look for this componists.

@ brian: It's not that easy to transcribe as you think because of the speed it is played with. If it was a little slower it wouldn't be a thing.

...by the way: You know with "Sibelius" it's possible to import midi files, so if I could make a midi file out of that mp3, I wouldn't have to spend hours and hours transcribing.

Does anybody have any experience with converting mp3 to mid??

I'm not sure it's possible to convert mp3 to midi. Midi doesn't contain any actual music, it's all computer data that the soundcard converts into sound. That's why Midi files are so small in size compared to regular music files. Of course, there's a good chance I'm wrong.

I still say that it wouldn't be that hard to transcribe, and it's not all that fast. However, if you've tried doing it and you're having trouble, try this program that you can download here:
https://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/download.html
It's a program that slows down the speed of an audio file, but you can only use it for about a month because it's a demo.

I have the feeling looking for a score will take more time than it will to just transcribe by ear. Plus, the most likely thing you would find is a lead sheet anyway, with just chord symbols and melody. If you wanted to play it as it was on the recording, you'd still probably have to transcribe the bass line, chord voicings, etc.

Anyway, that's just my suggestion. Good luck on your quest :)

hehe, thank's

We'll see...

I've checked out these Brazil Jazz Componists, but their style is too different from this piece.

If I don't find it, I'll transcribe...

Thanks anyway
