Is this piano easy to fix/tune
on: January 20, 2014, 10:07:31 PM
So , firstly , I'm not sure if i'm on the right website for this , but I'll give it a try.

Recently my old piano got moved back to it's owner ( my uncle) so I am searching a replacement which is cheap and second hand ( with cheap I mean reaaaal cheap )
I am a rock/jazz/blues pianist so I don't need the best clear tones , just something that plays in key ;-) ( a warm , old tone is nice anyway ! )

I have found a piano for 100 € , I requested the seller for a video of a ' walk on the keys'
this is it :
It needs tuning and has some keys with some bad tone , but it's one of the better sounding ones I've encountered in my quest ( oh the horror piano's with wooden frames and broken keys )

So anyway

here is the question :  Is this easy fix (if  for example , a tuner could do it in an hour or so ) ? Is it worth the effort of moving and buying ?

Realize that any acoustic piano will need regular maintenance to keep in tune.  At the very least a tuning once a year.  If you are a heavy player or live in a region with large seasonal climate shifts, the tunings will need to be more frequent if you want to keep it in tune.  While you are searching for an instrument at your price point, also factor in the cost of regular tunings.

In order to answer your question, you need to hire a piano tech to evaluate the instrument.  The tech will need to have a close look under the hood.  Simply playing an instrument, will not reveal all possible problems such instrument could have.  The same tech would also be able to give you an estimate on the value of the instrument, and what a reasonable price to pay would be.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

quantum is right. You must have a piano tech evaluate the piano. Even if the piano were for FREE.

If not ... It costs to have it move. It costs to have it tuned. And only then could you discover whether it won't hold tune, or has other serious issues.
