Wrist and finger discomfort. Is this normal?
on: January 22, 2014, 02:27:45 PM
Hello,

I play keyboard for years but I'm a newbie about classical piano, just started to learn it with lessons 3 months ago. 2 weeks ago I got a feeling on my right wrist and thumb and it started to happen every day. It's like my thumb contracts by itself and starts to tingle if I did not try to stay relaxed. And quite same about my wrist. Is this normal?

Thanks!

Well the obvious answer is no, some tingle perhaps as you adjust but it should not be causing obvious or bothersome discomfort. However, are sure it's from classical piano study ? What else have you been doing with your hands lately ? I get like this from snow blowing out the driveway, a lot of hammering etc. for instance. Even when I took back up with bike riding after some time away my wrists and general grip stiffened up on me.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

I've seen no one who teaches themselves who didn't have plenty of tension.  The tingling could even come from poor shoulder placement.  Seek professional help.

After some time this issue just disappeared so it was not because of piano, fortunately. Thanks for replies!
