Beethoven's Violin Concerto - Piano Version
on: November 19, 2004, 12:00:14 PM
Is there anyone who has studied Beethoven's Violin Concerto - Piano Version?
It was arranged by the composer himself and I found a recording by Daniel Barenboim's piano.
How is the solo violin part arranged to piano version?
I am also wondering if there are piano version Mendelssohn and Tschikovsky violin concertos arranged by themselves....

i dont know, but id like to hear them! especially the mendy
i have a really nice naxos recording of this beethoven concerto by jando - does a good job.
id have to see the score, but it sounds just like he filled out the left hand with chords and did simple things like that - doesnt sound too hard.

The piano concerto version of Beethoven's violin concerto was apparently produced in a hurry at the request of Clementi. Beethoven was short on cash at the time, which is probably the only reason he complied with the request.
It is much better as a violin concerto. The best part of the piano version are the cadenzas. These are completely different cadenzas from the ones in the violin concerto. The first movement cadenza has the piano in a "duet" with the tympani. Very clever touch here. I also have Barenboim's recording which is nice.

yes i agree its better for violin
but still great music
i find it amazing that , if i WAS done in a hurry - he managed to somehow create innovative cadenzas like that

Avoid this like the plague. The VC is great -- the PC is really bad.

Beethoven wrote it grudgingly - and this is very evident in this miserable excuse of an arrangement.
The VC is infinitely better than the piano version.

yes, i am one of those rare breeds that actually uses the forum search function vs. clogging things up with creation of a new duplicate thread on the same topic vs just responding to an existing conversation.
this is an oldy but merits resurrections.
i can see why in the past these kids talked it down, but to be honest, it's not that bad, i sorta like it actually.
it's neat that there is a '7th' piano concerto, shame it's not programmed more often. listening to it now and i have not gotten board with it (unlike say a lot of chopin's solo music, which is tiresome after about 90 seconds...)
