Square Piano ID request
on: February 08, 2014, 02:18:18 AM

I am trying to find out as much as I can about this piano:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/116790727@N03/sets/72157640652922005/

It is the piano on page 44 (item 32) in this catalogue:

https://books.google.com/books?id=3eEsAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA29&lpg=PA29&dq=Spinet+5+octaves+Thomas+Hitchcock&source=bl&ots=5jSewiiWRu&sig=drvFUftK0B5O0kbDnZSLjYptRGc&hl=en&sa=X&ei=V5TxUoHOD5HMsQSWrYDYBw&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Spinet%205%20octaves%20Thomas%20Hitchcock&f=false

There is a songbook depicted on the top with the title "Auld Lang Syne," (by Robert Burns) and the facing page reads "Edinburgh Forever," so I know there is a Scottish connection, but I wonder if it was made there, or simply painted by someone from there, or maybe made for a customer from there.

If anyone can help me find out anything else I would be very interested to hear.  Thank you!

Looks like a lovely little instrument.  I'd love to know more about it too - and I am specifically curious as to what your connection or interest in this instrument is, in particular?  Care to share?

Hi JH, my father owns it and wants to know its history.  Neither of us play much and it has been used as decoration in his house.  It looks like it is the very same piano that M. Steinert took on his tour, referred to by Hipkins as "the oldest broadwood square piano known." ( https://books.google.com/books?id=yvgIAQAAMAAJ&lpg=PA106&ots=nnyv1CXXev&dq=steinert%20%22square%20piano%22&pg=PA106#v=onepage&q=steinert%20%22square%20piano%22&f=false )
But we need expert opinion.

But we need expert opinion.

You might find some information on this site or you could contact the owner Bill Kibby-Johnson who is a historian that lives close to Norwich, UK I believe.

Not sure if you are within his geographical range but he might know of someone in your area who could come and inspect/ appraise the instrument. That is always the best route to go is to have someone look at the instrument in person.
