Historic Bach performances on the harpsichord
on: February 20, 2014, 10:22:28 PM
Two performances of Bach on the harpsichord.
Violet Gordon Woodhouse plays three short pieces as a prelude to the Italian Concerto (recorded 1926)
Wanda Landowska plays the Goldberg Variations (recorded 1933)
I imagine that a 20th century harpsichord is about as far from Bach's own keyboard as a modern grand is from Beethoven's piano nevertheless I am sure modern players of these classics are aware of the sonority that informed the earliest performances.
If you explore the rest of my site you will find many historical recordings which may be of interest if only to illustrate pianistic styles you have no intention of emulating!

Actually, harpsichords built today tend to be close replicas of baroque instruments. That has been true since about the middle of the twentieth century.  Harpsichords made in the earlier part of the twentieth century did have important differences, including iron frames and an additional stop.

The revival of the harpsichord at the beginning of the twentieth century prompted a number of composers to write for the instrument and it is these early 20th Century models for which they wrote.  Such instruments appear no longer to be made, so we are in the interesting position that a historically accurate instrument is easier to get for a 17th century work than an early twentieth century one.

Thank you for your clarification. These two performances sound as though they are on hefty instruments as you suggest.  I understand that Landowska ordered a specially built version for later recordings.
