Trills and scales in Beethoven C minor concerto?
on: February 26, 2014, 09:52:11 PM
I'm preparing for an upcoming competition, and most of the piece is coming along quite nicely, but I believe that in order to win, I need to raise my level of technical comfort close to perfect. Although I don't like much of his interpretation, Zimerman's recording with Bernstein (popular on Youtube:
false) exhibits such perfect technical comfort (the trill at 6:11 is a perfect example of what I mean); I wish I were able to approach that. My scales and trills are okaaaay, but they're not nearly as clear and brilliant as I feel they could be. Is there anything I could do to really improve that in just a few days? or is such technique simply a result of years and years of good practice?
Currently working on Beethoven:
Piano Concerto in C minor, Op. 37
Piano Sonata No. 4 in E flat, Op. 7
Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor "Appassionata", Op. 57
Piano Sonata No. 27 in E minor, Op. 90

Not to discount the need for extensive practice, but one possible "quick fix" improvement is to make sure you emphasise the beat notes, both in trills and scales - particularly scales. It's too often forgotten, and makes for unstructured passages that don't sound nearly as controlled, and often not as fast.

Any specific way I should practice trills and scales? This might be a trivial question that I should have asked years ago... but I didn't.
