Please help a total piano greenhorn
on: March 01, 2014, 05:39:36 PM
I had a quick question on a piano and I was hoping someone could give me some help.
I'm writing a screenplay for film school about an old blues piano player. His piano plays a major roll in the story. It needs to be a vintage possibly rare upright piano of significant value (worth somewhere between 15K - 50K).
Could anyone give me some makes / models / years that would meet these specifications?
It would be a huge help, thank you!

2014 dollars? Even a very good upright -- vintage or otherwise -- isn't worth that much money, unfortunately.
I would imagine, though, that such a man might well have a treasured Knabe or Mason&Hamlin or possibly even a Baldwin (but not likely to be a Steinway) upright which might mean a great deal to him -- even if it wasn't worth that much money. I envision it as a full size upright -- say 5 feet or a little more tall -- and rather ornate casework. But that's just my imagination working!

An exception would be an instrument once owned by somebody who had since become famous. That might fetch a lot of money.
