Please help with my ARCT List E Choice!
on: March 05, 2014, 06:08:28 AM
Hey everyone,
I'm doing my Arct in Piano performance soon but my teacher and I are struggling to decide what I should play for my list E. I would like something easy and slow, preferably short as well.
Here are my other repertoire choices:
List A: Partita No. 2 in C minor BWV 826-Bach
List B: Moonlight Sonata-Beethoven
List C: Fantaisie-Improptu in c sharp minor op. 66-Chopin
List D: Moment Musical op. 16 no. 4-Rachmaninoff
Concert Etude:Etude op. 25 no. 13-Chopin
The reason I would like something easy and slow is because I've got a couple of fast pieces in there already and I'd like another piece to relax my hands a bit. (My hands are always really tired after the fast pieces, especially the Rachmaninoff) Nothing with super big chords either as I've got pretty small hands that can reach a ninth if I stretch. Also, what does everyone think of my program. Is it a good length? Your help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Hi and welcome to Pianostreet,

Your program seems to feature a lot of pieces that use fast arpeggiated or scalar passages.  For something like an exam, especially the ARCT, you may wish to consider repertoire choices that display more varied character on the instrument.

A subjective point to think about (it all depends on the exam jury), is that your selection includes a good number of frequently played pieces.  Unfortunately there are examiners, read: educated professional musicians, that find it difficult to listen to and criticize music which in their ears seems to be "overplayed" and produce an objective grading perspective without introducing personal bias.

Some things to look at:

Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas Op. 2
You have to play all of it so it is not short.  But there is a wonderful lyrical movement, and the outer movements will add some percussive playing to your program.

Coulthard - Image astrale
Coulthard - Image terrestre

Kuzmenko - In Memoriam to the Victims of Chornobyl

Messiaen - Preludes 2, 3 or 8.

Bartok - Roumanian Dances Op. 8a, either 1 or 2

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thanks for your suggestions quantnum :) I'll look into some of your suggestions. The Romanian dances look good :)
