Is Hanon 60 studies the best?  How about Aloys Schmitt Op. 16?  What do you think of Czerny's Op. 599, his Op. 823, and his Op. 777.  What about John Thompson's Modern Course Method, is that one of the 'better' books to learn piano for a self-taught 56 y/o older beginner pianist who's at the Early Intermediate Level?? ;)  Best Wishes...and a nice day to everyone :)

Hi czernyragtimepia,

I recommend the RCM etudes. Start with Grade 1. There are approximately a dozen or so short one page etudes that are rather enjoyable to play. Many skills will be developed. It's worth the trouble of special ordering them as they are not usually stocked in music stores.
