6th grade extra list
on: November 22, 2004, 02:35:55 AM
I have been teaching for many years and at present have a 13 year old girl doing 6th grade.  Her pieces include Debussy album leaf and de Falla Cancion as well as a Baroque and Classical piece. Could anyone suggest an extra list that is a bit different.  I have been through heaps of books and would be grateful for any help.

I assume this is for an AMEB exam (one of my students is playing the same combination for Lists  C & D!).  You could try one of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Scenes from an Imaginary Ballet these are all about grade 6 level (nos 5 and 4 have been favourites of my students).

Another one is Colin Brumby's Il Capitano this is not too fast and has some nice big chords.  It is a good concert piece too.  Alfred Hills Valse Triste is another good lyrical piece.  Malcolm Williamson's Ships from 5 Preludes is also around grade 6 level and is a bit different.

Just some suggestions....good luck in suitable extras (I know what a task this can be)

Kerry I just had another thought for you...

what about a piece from Joaquin Turina's Clowns suite?  There are a few good ones in this set such as Clowns and The Trained Dog that are around Grade 6 level.  The examiners are unlikely to have heard many of these before.

Good luck!
