More comfortable in a computer chair?
on: March 15, 2014, 03:49:42 PM
Im fairly new to piano with no formal training. I play keyboard in my spare bedroom (music room/office). I began playing a cheap $100 special to see if interest was to be had in the instrument. Seeing no need to buy a bench to determine this, i sat on my computer chair. Ten  months and 76 keys later I haven't changed. The adjustable height and easy maneuverability for switching of octaves seems like a decent fit for this instrument. Am i just delirious and dismissing the need for a new purchase or is this plausible?

It is probably more important that you are using proper posture, than the specific chair or bench you sit on.

With my previous piano, the matching bench had very sharp edges that would cut into one's legs if one sat for long periods of time.  Because of this I started to use a dining table chair.

At university, many practice rooms didn't even have benches.  People just stacked chairs to achieve their desired sitting height.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

even Glenn Gould has his custom made chair which he carries everywhere :D thus I see you have no reason to not use your computer chair

Yes... Those bastards stealing the good. long piano benches. How are you supposed to take a nap in the practice room if you can't lie down on a piano bench?
