Shakespeare Anniversary
on: March 21, 2014, 04:38:50 AM
One of the anniversaries this year, April 26th to be exact, is the 450th birthday of Will Shakespeare.

I can think of lots of operas based on his work, and a number of orchestral works, and settings of his poems or the songs in the plays.

My mind, however, is drawing a blank on an original piano work (not, for a change, a transcription).

Any ideas?

Hi !

I just had a look at this page :

https://imslp.org/index.php?title=Category:Shakespeare,_William/

I don't see any piano solo piece in the list. Many pieces for piano and voice are there however.

Beethoven's Sonata no. 17 isn't listed, but it is said to have been inspired by The Tempest.

The only one of Beethoven's sonatas he named himself, and he got it wrong. It's hard to believe he read anything of Shakespeare's Tempest except the title itself.

How about Debussy's La danse de Puck?

In any case, I do like the transcriptions. How about a list of those anyway?

 Thanks!  :D

Hmm, OK. If you mention the Mendelssohn, though, you're off my Christmas card list.  ;D

Most of the transcriptions I have/know of are from the Operas based on the plays, so other transcriptions especially welcome.

OK, I've found one, possibly two.

Bedrich Smetana: Macbeth and the Witches

Isidor Philipp: Puck

Not sure if the Philipp is Shakesperean, or just about elves.
