Feedback on My own Nocturne pleaseeeeeeee!
on: March 27, 2014, 11:11:40 PM
If any of you have read my previous posts I have referenced a composition of my own. Here is the video. It is very much inspired by Chopin. Also should i perform this for a talent show coming up or work on Chopins nocturne in f minor or maybe his c sharp minor op 27 no1? Please give constructive criticism if possible especially from other composers or pianists it would be a huge help. Btw my trills dont suck i just used my digital piano for this video and the action is not good for quick notes.

Honestly, the very beginning sounds like a mix of little bits from the 3rd Ballade and the F minor Concerto. Overall, the musical structure seemed a bit disorganized.  Did you write it out by hand? Or using notation software such as Finale?

the beginning is inspired by those pieces i shoudlve said aflat major ballade instead of f minor. i did it by hand. but as for the disorganization. which part in particular did you think so i can work on improving it

There is no need for this, in my opinion.

Simply put the work aside, into your portfolio, and begin working on something else!

Inspiration from great composers is a good thing to have, but be careful with allowing your inspiration to be so recognizable.

The best thing you can do is listen to a lot of music, read musical literature, practice piano, maybe study some music theory. That way you will know yourself what needs to be improved and how you can do it. Get to the point where you know every single Chopin piece by heart (well maybe that's overdoing it, but that's what I did and I don't ever regret it :D). Maybe read a biography of him; listen to the composers that influenced him as well as the major ones that he influenced.
