Feeling really lazy when I learn new piece...
on: April 06, 2014, 07:11:46 PM
Hello, I play piano for about 8 years.
Recently I have a problem when I learn new pieces...
I have average sight-reading but it is not good for challenging pieces..
For example I learn Chopin etude op 25 no 11 and always when I learn new section I feel really lazy to memorize the notes.. I just enjoy when I play the notes and improve accuracy and speed, like in the first page.. but I don't enjoy when I learn the 4th page or the 5th page.. i don't know why.. if i could play it and just work on speed accuracy and about the musical behind it i would enjoy... For example I'm trying to master Rachmaninoff op 23 no 5 and i really enjoy doing it!
Also i try to learn Schubert liszt Ave Maria and even on page 1 i feel frustrated when i cant play with 2 hands(on the first try) and feeling lazy to learn the hands together.
I don't know why I have this problem and I need some advices and help...
Thanks (:

What I do when this happens is:

*I take a break from the piano. Sometimes we all have to, just to take a rest.

*I take a break from the piece itself. I continue practing the already memorized sections though.

*I hear recordings of the piece. If I really like the piece, I hear recordings and think to myself "wow, I wanna play like this" and that sometimes gets me motivated.

Also, no need to feel rushed. I'm learning the Appassionata and I told my teacher this is a long term goal. I'm still in the first movement after 2 weeks, but I don't regret it. I also like to have some secondary "easy" pieces such as some Bach's preludes, so I don't get bored.

It's not laziness. It sounds like you have deficient technique. Laziness is similar to procrastination in that there is a lack of skill and/or knowledge.  Remedy this, and the issue you describe will disappear.

I don't think I have deficient technique.. I just don't like to memorize and I don't know why.... Maybe I feel boring when I memorize sections.. I just need to learn how to enjoy from memorizing pieces or to be better at sight reading I guess..

Then it seems like you have an incorrect concept of learning.  Learning is memorization.
It also seems like you have deficient skills in general because you have issues sight reading.  That boredom you feel is probably your mind shutting down because it has to do too much work it has to do.  Not doing it is the solution when you are overwhelmed.
