Competition Repertoire Help?
on: April 10, 2014, 02:21:41 AM
Hi All,

I'm thinking about entering the San Jose piano competition in June, but I'm having a difficult time figuring out what to pick for a Romantic Piece for the second round.

It needs to be under 9 minutes.  From my current rep, I could use Liszt HR2 or Chopin Ballade 2 or 3 to fill the spot, but I don't know if it fills the program out well.  I was thinking about the Schumann Toccata ('cause I would love an excuse to learn that), but I'm not sure that really complements the program well either.

I'm probably over-thinking this, but I figured I could get some good ideas here.

Here's my program:
1st Round:
Bach - Prelude and Fugue in d sharp min from WTC1
Alkan - Allegro Barbaro op 35 no 5
Shostakovich - Prelude and Fugue in e minor

2nd Round:
Mozart 1st mov of k576 (Pity they won't let me do the whole thing!)
*Undecided Romantic Piece*
Scriabin Sonata 2

3rd Round:
Some Scarlatti
Rachmaninoff op. 3
Ravel Miroirs

Louis M.Gottschalk (1829 - 1869):

Gottschalk is not unknown or unappreciated, but I feel he is underplayed for the quality and appeal of the music.  Probably the first true American "Rock Star", with a fan following on the level of Liszt, and certainly toured and concertized more (or almost more) than just about any pianist/composer I can think of.
