Liszt Concerto 1
on: April 15, 2014, 03:43:07 AM
Hello all,

In only two weeks, I will be performing Liszt's First Concerto at a local music festival. However, this piece is very.....raw.....in a way (ie. not memorized, can barely play all the notes together, not much expression/emotion). Is there anyways for me to improve faster....I really am trying my hardest and practicing 3+ hours daily.

Thanks for your time and concern.
Pathetique - Beethoven
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 - Liszt
Toccata - Bowen
Warrior/Memories in an Ancient Garden - Louie

There are probably some superficial ways you can improve, but it sounds like you need a lot more time on this piece. If it's not memorized that seems to suggest you don't have a very solid understanding of the piece--structure, harmonic development, etc. -- so I would suggest you do a lot of score study and practice away from the piano. As far as playing all the notes together -- trying to put something together on a very short amount of time can tempt you to just practice for speed, but in reality the best thing you can do is slow practice. It will secure things for you and show you where something is missing. If you must muddle through this performance, that's all you can do. Not knowing anything about your situation, ability, or your teacher, I can only advise you to give it more time and stick with it but maybe next time plan better according to your level of study and what you can realistically accomplish in a given time.

Post some video of you playing it maybe? I've played the Liszt concerto before, so I might be able to critique your playing.
